The Tree O'Clock World Record Attempt - Sat 5th December 2009
As part of National Tree Week, volunteers joined forces with BBC Breathing Places and the Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group in partnership with Sedgemoor District Council in attempting the new Guinness World Record of planting the most trees in one hour in multiple locations.
The following trees were planted:
· 49 Buddleia davidii (butterfly bush)
· 20 Prunus spinosa (Blackthorn)
· 1 x Silver Birch (Betuta jacquemontii)
· 15 X Sorbus aucuparia (Rowan)
· 15 X Viburnum opulus (Guelder Rose)
Sedgemoor’s Parks and Open Spaces Project Officer, Marina Turner would like to thank all the ‘Friends’, staff, residents and children as well as employees from Citrus Digital of South Molton, Devon for turning up with their spades and shovels to plant 100 trees at Apex Park on Saturday 5th December.
The morning was a great success and the Parks and Open Spaces Project Officer was extremely pleased that nearly 40 volunteers turned up on the day. Luckily, weather conditions were perfect and both children and adults of all ages attended.
On 31st October 2009 (Halloween), Brian Ducker led a bat/bird box making
workshop for local children at Apex Office. The workshop was organised
by the Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group and in partnership with
Sedgemoor District Council and was funded by the Somerset Community
Foundation's grassroot's grants scheme.
Members of Apex Park Improvements Group and Officers from Sedgemoor District Council celebrated in July 2009 after being awarded the Green Flag Award for Apex Park for 2009/10. Sedgemoor District Council's Chairman Cllr Moreton and Parks and Open Spaces Project Officer Marina Turner collected the award from Michaela Strachan at a ceremony in Bournemouth.
The Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group raised
£82.60 for Macmillan Cancer Support on 25th September
at Apex Park office for providing coffees/teas and cakes
for members of the public during a two hour period
(2.00 – 4.00 p.m.).
For the ‘How many sweets there are in a jar’ competition, Sedgemoor's Parks and open Spaces Policy Officer, Harley Cook guessed closest to the number stating that there were 101 sweets. Harley donated his winning monies towards Macmillan Cancer Support.
