Friends of Apex Park

Projects

The Friends of Apex Park Improvement Group have assisted the Council in the following projects:

  • A new flat, full circular walk was created in 2004 around the lake suitable for wheelchair users at a cost of £60,000.
  • Annual bulb and tree planting to improve the visual amenity of the park and to create new habitat for wildlife.
  • Completion of park users surveys
  • The provision of a new cycleway link within Apex Park 2005 to provide a suitable route to the popular footpath along the River Brue to the South Esplanade - An alternative route for the path within Apex Park was sought in response to concerns raised by the Friends of the Park.
  • Consultation on the Management Plan for the Apex Park.
  • The establishment of a constitution for the Friends of Apex Park Improvement Group
  • Enhancement of existing Interpretation Boards
  • The successful Open Day held in the park in August 2005
  • National Play Days at which over 2,000 children take part 
  • Consultation on new visitor information for the park. ie Wildlife Leaflet, Dog Walking Leaflet and Schools Education packs.
  • Gaining the Civic Trust Green Flag Award for 2007/08 and 2009/10
  • Restoration of the wildflower meadow
  • Creation of the Friends website you are currently visiting.
  • Wildflower and historic information boards
  • Creation of 21 new fishing platforms and two new islands
  • Holding more events/functions in the park
  • Planting of a memorial tree and other trees a part of BBC's Guinness World Record Attempt
  • Bulb Planting
  • Ragwort Pulling
  • Reporting any problems / hazards within the park

New projects for the future to be considered by the Friends Group: 

  • Community composting
  • More events in the parks for 2010 - i.e Circus
  • Ongoing bulb and tree planting schemes
  • Providing visitors Park information
  • Separate waste  (i.e plastic, bottles, cans, paper)
  • Recycling Banks
